More Thoughts on Georgia
Some of this is pretty much moot, since apparently the shooting has ended, at least for now.
-If I was President, the Georgian troops that we airlifted home from Iraq would have arrived carrying several hundred Javelin missiles.
-Apparently the Russian Black Sea fleet did take part in the hostilities, sinking a Georgian gunboat off Abkhazia. Hopefully the Ukrainians follow through on their threat not to allow the fleet to return to port in Sebastapol. It would be even more fun if the Turks deny them passage through the Bosphorus.
Something that would have been a potentially inventive solution on the Georgians part: after the Russians gave Russian citizenship to any South Ossetian who wanted it, the Georgians should have passed a single-citizenship law (the US has one, but doesn't enforce it) - basically saying, you can't be a citizen of Georgia and another country. The Ossetians with Russian passports at that point could either give up their Georgian citizenship, or Russian. Any who decided to retain their Russian passports would then, since they wouldn't have entry visas, be in violation of immigration laws, and could be arrested and deported.
Probably wouldn't have been effective, but it would have at least put the Russians in a very odd legal spot.
Oh, and Georgia and the Ukraine should be offered immediate membership in NATO. And since First Armored Division hasn't moved from Germany to Fort Bliss yet (I believe they're scheduled to move their from their current deployment in Iraq), we should negotiate basing rights for them in the aforementioned countries (say, 2 brigades in each.)
I might also be tempted to offer reduced sentences/early parole for any convicted spammers to fuck with the Kremlin's computers. DDOS, anyone?
