I really want to write more about gun rights and other more Libertarian stuff
But things keep happening in Iraq, and then John F*cking Kerry keeps opening his mouth. It seems like every time he does, I'm reminded of the quote, "It is better to keep your mouth shut, and have people think you are stupid, that to open it and remove all doubt." It seems like every time Kerry opens his mouth about the War on Terror, he reveals his complete and utter lack of a clue.
The latest idiocies to come to my attention:
"If I were president, we would not be in Iraq today, we would not be at war."
Oh really, Senator Clueless? Then what exactly would we be doing? In case you failed to pay attention while you were on the damn Senate Intelligence Committee (I guess Ted Kennedy wasn't there to tell you what to think), Al-Queda and their Islamist asshole friends declared war on the United States about a decade ago. Blew up a couple of embassies, attacked a Navy ship...does any of this ring a bell in that empty head of yours? Maybe that little bit about the planes flying into buildings caught your attention? But you say "We would not be at war." What would you have done? Probably fired a few cruise missiles at a few more tents in Afghanistan like your party's hero. We didn't start this war, dipshit, and we're in it whether we want to be or not. 9/11 should have shown you what will happen if we try the "Perhaps if we're nice they'll go away" method of dealing with these people.
"It's an intelligence-gathering, law-enforcement, public-diplomacy effort."
Earth to Senator Dumbass, that's already been tried. It resulted in the deaths of 3,000 Americans in NY, DC, and PA. You're not going to win this war by arresting Al-Queda, or by talking nice to them. What they want is fundamentally incompatible with our national interest. And the only language they understand is force, pure, simple force. The ability to kill them and the will to do the same. This is not a game of cops and friggin' robbers. This is a fight to the death, and me, I choose to live.

You need to Read This
Found at The Smallest Minority: Excellent, excellent story on the Columbine killings published in Slate. Long story short: almost everything said and published about it in the mainstream media is wrong. And probably evertying that will be said on the evening news shows tonight by Rather, Jennings, Brokaw, King, et al, will be wrong. Why? Maybe because they're lazy, and don't want to dig to deep, because that would be work and require thinking. Maybe because portraying it the way they do serves their political agenda. Most likely a combination of both.

0700--Range Week
Won't have a lot of time this week and most of next-my company is out on the ranges learning to shoot. Some listen to the drill sergeants and do pretty well; some are rockheads and don't listen and don't do well. Coolest thing I overheard, from one of the female privates: "Tomorrow (actually it was yesterday, the first day they fired lived ammo) is the day I've been looking forward to since we started."
Aside: Do you have any idea how frustrating it is to spend 8 days straight on a rifle range, surrounded by 200+ M-16s, and not get to shoot?

0830--John Kerry Finally Consistent on an Issue
At least, his voting record is consistent. Kerry's scores 100% on the Brady Campaign's Congressional Voting Scorecard. And he earns an F grade from both the NRA and the GOA.
His voting record doesn't square with what he says, however: "I'm a gun owner. I've been a hunter since I was about 12 years old," Kerry said. "My position is very clear. I support the Second Amendment."
Um, Senator? That two-faced thing? You're doing it again.

2030-- David Bernstein at The Volokh Conspiracy has an excellent piece on Canada's new anti-hate speech law. The law basically makes any criticism of homosexuality, including Biblically-based expression that homosexuality is sinful, a hate crime. So if you were to stand on a street corner in Edmonton and read the passage in, I believe, Leviticus (my Bible knowledge is not where it should be) that states that a man should not lie with a man as with a woman, you can be arrested and thrown in jail.
I'm glad I live in America. Of course, given the way the Left writes things like university speech codes, how far are we from this?

I'm not Sure if This Guy is Recruiting for the Church or the Army
But it works pretty well both ways. From Clashpoint via Townhall.com:
"One last word for the young Christian man: Do you want to grow up quickly? Then leave mommy's familiar, safe haven and venture out into the danger zone. As Leon Podles said, "Go find your Holy Grail; go meet the strange, meet the unfamiliar." Protect people; lead people; rescue people. Fight inequities and absurdities. Beware, young man, of parents and pastors who want to "mother" you. Avoid the secure; fear over-protection; and happily accept the masculine task of the patriarch, the prophet, the warrior and wild man.
Get to a place, young warrior, where pain is not a big deal, where you embrace resistance. And by your example, you will encourage others to resist self-doubt, squeamishness, indecision and the impulse to surrender and withdraw into the warm, wet womb of Wussville."

Barry Bonds in Not Human
4 Homers in 3 games. The dude is almost 40. He was almost the entire offense for the Giants in the weekend series. If somebody else had actually contributed, they might not have lost all three games to the Loathsome Ones. Grrrrrr.
Addendum: Bonds has more career homers (665) than doubles (541). When he hits them hard, he hits them very, very far.

Another Hamas-hole Down
Good job my the Mossad and the IDF. May the Israelis continue working their way down the Hamas org chart until individual gunmen are being hunted in the streets my helicopter gunships. Of course, the remaining Hamas assholes are making the usual noises about making the streets of Israel run with blood. Keep on mouthing off, guys. It makes it easier to find you and kill you.
One thing that really bugs me about the news coverage, though, is that the press weenies continue to use the verb 'assassinate.' Look, people, these dirtbags are the leaders of a terrorist organization that has declared war on Israeli. They're not the leadership of any sort of nation-state, and nobody elected them. They're not civilians, they're legitimate military targets. In warfare, the most effective way to disrupt the enemy is to destroy their command and control systems. Killing the commanders is an effective way to do that, in addition to the deterent effect it has on low-level terrorists and potential recriuts. It's a military op, pure and simple. But for some reason the press wants to see these thugs as legitimate representatives of the Palestinian people., and so they keep refering to the decapitation strikes as 'assassinations.' Screw the AP.

Gun Show Review--Charlotte, NC 17-18 Apr 04
Took the wife and kid to a gunshow in Charlotte yesterday. (How cool is my wife? She actually likes going to gunshows.) Not as big as the Washington Arms Collectors Puyallup shows, but the biggest I've been to since I moved down here to Hot and Humid Land. Amazingly, I only saw one guy selling beef jerky. Plenty of tables selling military surplus stuff. Even some good deals left around mid-day Sunday. Every show I go to, I'm amazed at the sheer volume of AR-15 parts/accessories for sale. That rifle is an entire industry unto itself. I'm not in the market for hunting rifles or turkey guns, so I mostly ignored those guys. I wouldn't know a good deal on that kind of stuff anyway, unless someone was selling a brand-new rifle for $1. There were plenty of milsurp rifles for sale, although if you've got a Type 03 FFL (Curio and Relics) and access to the internet, they were overpriced. Although the prices that were being asked for Good (at best) condition Swiss K-31s made me feel good about the two I got in better condition for less.
Good deal: WASR-10 Romanian AK clone w/2x30rnd mags for $300
Most overpriced: Well worn Yugo SKS for $350. This guy must have bought it before large numbers were imported. I bought 2, unissued in the cosmoline, for $109 each, a couple of months ago.
Would have bought it, if I had $1 million: M-60 GPMG, full-auto, for $20k.
Would have bought it, if I had $1 million: FNC rifle, $2650
Would have bought it, if I didn't have one already: Same guy as above. Sig 229 in .40 w/night sights, $500. Mine cost $565, no might sights.
Would have bought one, if the baby hadn't started getting grumpy and needed a diaper change: VZ-24s for $150, guy had 5 or 6 of them. Plus, I was really interested in the crate they were in, too.
Promoter was C E Gunshows. Next show in Charlotte is 12-13 June.
